One of the best things about natural hair is that it is versatile and is capable of being styled in a variety of ways. This loose, curly afro look was created by Kenya Young of Young Sassy & Unique Hair Salon which is located in Durham, NC. The following text will discuss how you can go about recreating this look in eight easy steps. Feel free to give Kenya a call at (919) 444-9089 and let her create your next signature look.

Step 1: Moisturize
As is the case with most natural hair, manipulating dry hair can cause a significant amount of breakage and damage. So the night before you begin the process of creating your loose, curly afro, you should make sure your hair is well moisturized. Use a little coconut oil or olive and work it through your hair.

Step 2: Detangle
Start by taking your hair in sections and use your fingers to detangle. Sometimes adding a little conditioners can make this process much easier. You may have several different textures, so try to be gentle with your hair.

Step 3: Rinse and Deep Condition
Rinse out your conditioner and apply a deep conditioner. Put on a heating cap and sit under the dryer for half an hour or, if you would like to avoid using heat, sit inside of a steam shower.

Step 4: Final Rinse and Apply Your Styling Product
Rinse away the deep conditioner with cold water and dry your hair–preferably with something other than a towel because it tends to absorb moisture. Apply a generous amount of styling product, such as Kinky Curly Knot Today, from root to tip.

Step 5: Gel and Smoothe
Choose a side at the front of the head that you would like to smoothe down. Use a styling gel, such as Ampro to create a small section of hair that will not be teased out. Use bobby pins to secure it.

Step: 6: Separate and Roll
Separate your hair into sections and execute a roller set. You may need a spray bottle of water to keep their hair moist and more easily manageable throughout this process. It’s important to note that the bigger the roller you use, the more volume you will achieve. So it’s best to use jumbo rollers.

Step 7: Dry
Allow your hair to dry completely. Depending on your preferences, you may want to air dry or sit underneath a dryer. Avoid touching or manipulating your hair at this point.

Step 8: Separate and Tease
When the hair has dried completely, remove the rollers and being to separate you hair into smaller sections so that it covers all of the gaps in your head and it looks full. You can then begin to tease your hair. How much you tease will depend on how much volume you prefer.
