A Softer Mohawk Version
Variations of mohawk hairstyle have been around since ancient times. They were revived as a fashion statement in the 1980’s punk rock genre. Recently, professional hairstylists in the black hair industry have started to modify mohawks to fit the needs and lifestyles of today’s African American women also. Nivi Grimball’s variation is this tight curly rendition with burgundy highlights and a long bang.
Nivi wanted to embrace the boldness of the mohawk without making such an overpowering statement that her hairstyle would not fit in everyday life. She toned down her hairstyle by giving her model a precision haircut on the sides that were cut close to the scalp, leaving a longer length than the average mohawk. She also incorporated twist out curls throughout the style and gave her model a long curly bang. The extra length in the sides along with the curls and bang work together to create a softer mohawk version.

Twist Out Curl Pattern and a Precision Haircut in This Mohawk Hairstyle for Black Women
Nivi Grimball created this like by starting with the twist-out curl pattern. She created the curls by hand using setting lotion to help maintain the form. Nivi then set her model under the dryer. After the model came from under the dryer, Nivi used a pic to pull apart the curls. To add a little more excitement to this mohawk hairstyle for black women, Nivi Grimball inserted some burgundy, clip-on hair extensions. The extra hair color helps to highlight the tight curls also. This helps to focus your attention on the way the curls bounce as the model moves also.
Underneath the twist-out curl pattern is a precision haircut that is intentionally left longer than what one would expect for a mohawk hairstyle. The extra length on the sides helps to soften this mohawk also. This allows the look to work for African American women in professional situations.
